Incident: krsw wiki spam bots¶
Latest updates regarding the aforementioned incident.
Another wave of spam bots hit a number of instances with new user registrations and constant spam posts on the 8th of October echoing the same hallmarks of the one that occurred in February this year.
We identified and suspended a total of 262 accounts spread over 33 instances.
We have now taken action against a small number of instances as they have been deemed to be zombie instances unable to deal with the spam now or in future incidents.

We suspect that there are many more accounts that we are just not aware of at this time or are on instances that we continue to block from the last wave, so we are still actively looking out for them.
Again their posts were predominately in Japanese (due to the origin of the instigator), the bots did mention random users which undoubtedly caused disruption & annoyance to those recipients. In saying that, we are unaware of any of our users were included in these messages at this time.
No spam bot managed to join our instance (despite them trying to do so) as measures taken since the last one worked well. As did measures taken by a number of other instance admins which minimised their effect dramatically from last time.
Unfortunately, we do expect to add a number of instances to our blocklist in the coming days especially if we continue to identify more spam bots or it becomes clear they are not dealing with the issue and are effectively a zombie instance.
