Instance Roundup: 2024¶
Welcome to our instance roundup of whats been happening within our instance & fediverse
November Marked 2 Years of Existence¶
Back on the 5th November 2022, our instance was born. It's hard to believe it's been 2 years since we first opened. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us.
Here to even more years of growth, learning, and community building together!
Lack Of Blog Posts/Updates¶
Apologies for the last of updates or any posts for that matter.
Everytime we set out a new post, we felt that the content was lacking and therefore postponed the release until the next months' update and delaying each and every one since.
We will endeavour to get back to posting more regularly from now on but with a more reasonable quarterly update rather than monthly.
Spam Waves¶
This year we have encountered atleast major spam campaigns that have targeted the Fediverse by bots infiltrating instances with a number of accounts and unleashing voluminous spam posts.
The first one in February 2024 was the most severe, and served at warning that changes were needed to prevent such attacks in the future.
The October 2024 attack wasn't as disruptive, as the experience that the whole Fediverse gained previously helped but still caused a lot of inconvenience to some users.
Another spam wave happened last month in which bots took another approach and started replying to posts/threads with shourt url links.
As the Fediverse becomes home to more people, we can only envisage that these attacks will increase, but each one we are learning and lessening their effect on the network.
Moderation Stance Update¶
Thank you to those that report problematic users & posts, they do help make the instance & the wider network better for everyone.
In our 2 years, we have received 269 reports from our local users as well as those on other instances. Out of these, 85% were actioned with the remaining 15% deemed that be better suited to user blocking as they had not contravened our community guildlines to an extent that warranted further escalation.
Next Update¶
As we switch to quarterly updates, our next update will be in February 2025. We will endeavour to keep you all updated on any major changes or events that may occur in the meantime.
Finances¶
As always, the CR8R Team will continue to cover the costs of the instance to maintain the service for the users.
Server Costs 49.83
Email Provider 15.00
Storage Bucket 25.00
Domain Name (£54.84/yr) 4.57
Total: £ 94.40 GBP
The Team acknowledge that it has failed to increase their contributions in order to slowly start building up a surplus to ensure the instance's long term viability as the storage bucket costs spirialed.
This will be addressed in 2025 as our costs have since stablised and are confident that a financial buffer can now be built up.
Wish To Contribute?¶
If you would like (and have the means) to assist with the instance's running costs, then you can contribute by using our ko-fi or Liberapay page.
All funds raised will solely be used to help cover the running & upgrade costs.
